Clare Police Officers Greg Rynearson and Al White Pose for Photos After Winning 2011 Michigan Municipal League Community Excellence Award for Cops and Doughnuts Businesses

Bild von Michigan Municipal League (MML)
Clare’s Cops & Doughnuts business won the 2011 Community Excellence Awards Friday (Oct. 7, 2011) during the Michigan Municipal League’s 2011 Convention in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize. This is the highest statewide honor bestowed on a Michigan community by the League. The peer-nominated CEAs (affectionately called "The Race for the Cup" because the winner gets a gold cup as a trophy) starts at the regional level where a finalist from each of the League’s seven region is selected by community peers at regional meetings. The seven finalist then presented their entires at Convention on Wednesday (Oct. 5, 2011) and the Convention attendees voted for the winners in a competition monitored and sponsored by Plante & Moran. The seven finalists are West Branch for its Fabulous Friday’s program; Paw Paw for its Uncork Paw Paw initiative; Ludington for its New Years Eve Ball Drop event; Marquette for its water safety initiative; Southfield for its Youth Field Zone program; Vassar for its Chill on the Hill event; and Clare for the Cops and Doughnuts business. The community excellence awards were part of the Convention kickoff ceremonies. Also occurring during Convention were a full slate of educational sessions including the Economic Vitality Incentive Program, the latest on the personal property tax issue, risk management issues, medical marijuana, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship. Also taking place was the Michigan Municipal League Board annual meeting, selection of new board members and the 2012 president and vice president, a book giveaway, and opening remarks by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell and ArtPrize founder Rick DeVos. The Convention ran Oct. 4-7 in Grand Rapids during the final days of ArtPrize. The parade started things off and was followed by welcoming presentations by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, Susan Heartwell of the Student Advancement Foundation, and Rick DeVos, founder of ArtPrize. In addition, the League’s new book, "The Economics of Place: The Value of Building Communities Around People" was unveiled and the 400-plus League members attending the opening session at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel got free copies of the book, which is for sale on Amazon.com. And Governor Rick Snyder also was there an participated in a press conference where the book was officially presented to the public. For more about the League and what we do go to mml.org.
